Physical therapy (PT) is perhaps the most common treatment for musculoskeletal pain. It is used alone, or in combination with many of the interventional and minimally invasive procedures we offer. The goal of PT is to make daily tasks and activities easier and more comfortable. Our focus is on allowing joints to move freely, and to restore flexibility, strength, balance and motor skills. There are a variety of rehabilitation and treatment methods available and you will typically use several of them as part of your individualized care plan.
A physical therapy session usually lasts 30 to 60 minutes. You may begin with treatments such as heat, electrical stimulation or ultrasound and then move on to stretching and strengthening exercises. As your condition improves, your therapy plan will adjust accordingly.
Some physical therapy sessions may leave you with slight muscle fatigue or soreness, especially as you first begin your treatment plan. However, for the most part, you will be able to resume normal activities following PT. Risks and side effects are almost non-existent and we will discuss any concerns you may have prior to treatment.
